FIRE FIGHTER

Basic Fire Fighter Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.

Graduation from High School or a General Educational Development (GED) required.

Must have a valid driver’s license.

Applicant must pass all phases of the hiring process designated by the Rules of the Civil Service Board.

Must provide verification of certification as a State of Iowa or Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at the time of a conditional offer by the Fire Chief.
Fire Fighter Hiring Process:
Sioux City Fire Rescue holds an entrance examination for firefighter every two years.

Written Test | Applicants will be notified on the date, location, and time of the Civil Service written test. Applicants must achieve a passing score of 70% or above to advance to the next step of the hiring process. | ||
Physical Agility Test | At the completion of the written test, applicants schedule a date and time to participate in the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) orientation and practice sessions. However, only those that pass the written exam will be invited to participate in the CPAT process. The orientation / practice CPAT sessions are spaced approximately 8 weeks apart to allow candidates time to improve their physical fitness and enhance the likelihood of success. |

Oral Interview | An in-person oral interview is conducted with each candidate that successfully passed the CPAT. The interview board is an organized scoring process where panel members will be able to rank and rate the candidates based on their qualifications and determine who would be a good fit for the department. | ||
Eligibility List | Based on the combined scores of the written test and oral interviews, the top 20 candidates are placed, in order of overall scores, on an eligibility list which is certified by the Civil Service Board. This list is valid for two years from the certified date. | ||
Job Offer | Conditional job offers will be made by Sioux City Fire Rescue's Fire Chief based on available positions. After a conditional job offer, candidates will undergo a criminal background check, medical examination, and drug and alcohol screening. | ||
Hire Date | Once the medical examination has been reviewed, the applicant will receive a letter notifying them of their fire fighter appointment, along with the date and time to report for 3-week orientation. Upon the completion of the orientation period, the fire fighter will begin their 24-hour shift rotation at Station 3. |
