Why Recycle?

Save Natural Resources

By making products from recycled materials instead of using new or raw materials, we can conserve resources such as water, timber, petroleum and minerals.

Saves Energy

Recycling

It takes less energy to produce products from recycled materials as opposed to using new or raw materials.  For example, aluminum made from recycled aluminum uses 95% less energy than creating from raw material (bauxite ore).

Reduces Pollution

Creating products from recycled materials typically creates less pollution than when using new or raw materials.

Saves Landfill Space

Recycling reduces the amount of waste that enters the landfill, therefore conserving valuable landfill space.

STYROFOAM

Unfortunately, Sioux City does not have a foam recycling facility in the area that allows for drop-offs of material.  But there are ways you can recycle the material at your home.

  1. Save the material to use as packing material for personal shipments.
  2. Use for drainage in potted plants and outdoor landscaping containers.  Break foam into chunks to fill the bottom of the pot, then cover with potting mix.
  3. Combine with Acetone to make glue.  Soak the Styrofoam pieces in acetone for up to three minutes before removing them and allowing them to dry.
  4. Use as insulation.  Styrofoam is not affected by extreme temperatures, so it is reliable insulation that works well in homes and outdoor enclosures, like dog houses and tool sheds. It can also be treated with fire-retardant solutions.

Styrofoam is not accepted at the Citizen's Convenience Center.  Please contact LiteForm in South Sioux City to recycle styrofoam directly with them.  Please call 402-241-4402 to contact LiteForm.
