Fire Prevention Week: "Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape."
Post Date:10/03/2022 9:25 AM
Sioux City Fire Rescue is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week, October 9-15, 2022. This year’s campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your Escape”, works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires.
Today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning.
Sioux City Fire Rescue wants to share these key home fire escape planning tips:
• Make sure your plan meets the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
• Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.
• Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
• Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone should meet.
• Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household, including guests. Practice at least once during the day and at night.
This year’s theme is very important to Sioux City Fire Rescue. It supports our SAFE Home Program which is a free service provided to any Sioux City resident. This program consists of 3 components:
• Free Home fire and Safety Guide
• Free home survey by trained fire personnel
• Free smoke alarm installation
Residents can sign up for our SAFE Home Program at our Open Houses or by calling 279-6377.
Sioux City Fire Rescue has also begun school visits at each Sioux City elementary school. Every student in Sioux City grades K-2 receives training from their local firefighters as well as a tour of rigs and equipment. 3rd grade students are provided the opportunity to practice what they have learned by going through our fire safety trailer.
We will kick off the official start of Fire Prevention Week with an Open House at all Sioux City fire stations. Please join us Sunday, October 9th from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. Meet our personnel, take a station tour, and learn some fire safety tips.
