The Art Center previously received two Addy Awards for the Artsplash t-shirt, and Artsplash Poster.

Siouxland Media Award for communities 20,000 plus in population for media support for Artsplash, Festival of the Arts from the Iowa Arts Council.

Sioux City Art Center and the Art Center Association of Sioux City: Arts Build Communities/Arts Organization Away from the Iowa Arts Council.

Star of Siouxland Award from the Community Improvement Committee of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce.

2002 Tourism and the Arts Award: Sioux City Art Center Prairie Dog Quest from the Iowa Tourism Office and Travel Federation of Iowa.

Economic Development

The Sioux City Metro was ranked #1 for Economic Development with population between 50,000 and 200,000 in 2007 and 2008 by Site Selection magazine.

Sioux City was one of five national recipients of the Award of Excellence in Food Processing by Expansion Solutions magazine in 2007. The award recognizes areas that have made exceptional progress in economic development by successfully recruiting and retaining businesses.

The Sioux City MSA was designated as a 5-Star Quality of Life Metro by Expansion Management magazine in 2007.

The Sioux City Metro was ranked #3 for Economic Development with population between 50,000 and 200,000 in 2006 by Site Selection magazine.

Sioux City ranked #50 on the Forbes.com list of Best Small Places for Business and Careers in 2008.

Designated as the first "Great Place" in Iowa in 2005.


Events Facilities

Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena and the Long Lines Family Recreation Center have been selected by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as the host for the 2008 and 2009 NAIA National Volleyball Championship(s).

Sioux City has the contract to host the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship Tournament from 1998 through 2009.

Sioux City has the contract to host NAIA Wrestling National Championship from 2005 through 2008.

The Sioux City Musketeers hosted the 2006 United States Hockey League (USHL) Prospects/All-Star Game. The game was played at the state of the art Gateway Arena at the Tyson Events Center.

The Orpheum Theatre has earned over 12 million dollars since its Grand Opening in 2001. It was also listed #69 in Pollstar's "World Top 100 Theaters" for 2005.

The Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena has earned over 13 million dollars since its Grand Opening in 2003. It was also listed #66 in Pollstar's "World Top 100 Arenas" for 2004.

Sioux City has hosted RAGBRAI five times; 1973, 1978, 1988, 1993, and 2001.

Sioux City has twice received the prestigious Community of the Year Award for communities of 25,000 or more at the Iowa Tourism Conference.

Sioux City was voted an "All-America City" in 1990 by the National Civic League.

Finance

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the City for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2008. A Certificate of Achievement is valid for a period of one year only. The City of Sioux City, Iowa has received a Certificate of Achievement every year since fiscal year 1984 except for fiscal years 1996 and 1998. In order to be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, a government must publish an easily readable and efficiently organized comprehensive annual financial report. This report must satisfy both generally accepted accounting principles and applicable legal requirements.

Fire

Federal Aviation Administration - Certificate of Commendation - Sioux City Fire Department - In recognition of your dedication to maintaining preparedness to meet our shared responsibility for the safety and well -being of airmen and passengers, we commend the outstanding performance and professionalism of your immediate response to the tragedy of United Airlines Flight 232 on July 19, 1989, at Sioux Gateway Airport. We salute your actions which greatly contributed to rescue operations and the saving of lives.

United States Coast Guard Auxiliary - Certificate of Appreciation presented to Sioux City Fire Department on December 3,1994 for outstanding cooperation and assistance in furthering the purposes and principles of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The State of Iowa Hazardous Material Technician of Year presented to Sioux City Fire Department, Brad Robinson, on October 27, 1999.

Residential Fire Safety Institute - Life Safety Achievement Award presented to Sioux City Fire Department - In recognition of its work to keep its community free of deaths from fire for the following years, 2001 thru 2007.

The State of Iowa Hazardous Material Technician of Year presented to Sioux City Fire Department, Richard Anderson on October 27, 2005.

The Governor of the State of Iowa for Fire Prevention Officers of the Year presented to Sioux City Fire Department Brian Thiele and Joe Rodriguez on August 12, 2005. -In recognition of Distinguished Service In protection of Life and Property.

Goodwill Industries International award the Sioux City Fire Department and Local 7 the 2005 Volunteer Group of Year in recognition for Community Service.

The Governor of the State of Iowa presented the Life Saving Award to Sioux City Fire Department , Richard Uhl in 1995.

Assistant Fire Chief, Jim Clark earned his Executive Fire Officer certification.

Assistant Fire Chief, Brad Robinson earned the Chief's Commendation for his work in Urban Search and Rescue.

Human Rights Commission

The Commission initiated the War Eagle Human Rights Award, honoring the contribution of local citizens to human rights.

One thousand people attended Faces of Siouxland, the Commission's annual multicultural Fair. To coincide with the event, Morningside College hosted a concert by Doreen's New Orleans Jazz on the evening of the fair. Doreen's Jazz also performed free of charge at the event.

The Commission held an educational forum on September 21, 2006, in the City Council Chambers. Three speakers shared their personal immigration experiences. The event was televised on cable local access channel.

In 2006 the Commission held a workshop for high school students from seven area schools entitled “Students Promoting Equality." One hundred students attended the day long event. The focus of the event was diversity education. This will be an annual event.


Library

The Sioux City Public Library has met the conditions for state accreditation, one of only half of the libraries in Iowa that are accredited.

For 2007 the Sioux City Public Library was selected as one of 72 communities nation-wide to receive The Big Read grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Library’s award will be used to expand the One Book One Siouxland initiative, which is a partnership of the Sioux City Public Library, the South Sioux City Public Library and The Orpheum Theatre. The goal is to build community through the experience of reading and discussing the same novel, the same universal human issues and values, and viewing a film adaptation of the novel. The Big Read award is in support of the National Endowment for the Arts initiative to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

In December 2006, Library Director Betsy Thompson was recognized by the Iowa Library Association for completing a three-year term on the 1,500-member Association’s Executive Board. Thompson is currently serving as chairperson of the Iowa Library Association’s Strategic Planning Committee.

Public Works
Engineering
City Engineer Chris Payer, named 2003 "Young Engineer of the Year" by the Iowa Engineering Society.

Environmental Services
Ellen Myers, Environmental Services Manager, is a Chairperson of the Iowa Water Pollution Control Association (IWPCA) Industrial Pretreatment Committee.

The City's recycling program was awarded the Iowa Recycling Association 2001 Best Youth Education Campaign Award. This award recognized the Recycle Center's efforts to educate young people about the importance of recycling.

National Award: 2001 Communication, Education & Marketing Division Technical Excellence Gold Award for public education. Recognized the Recycle Center's "outstanding performance in operation, design, efficiency and overall integrated management style for solid waste systems throughout North America." (Both awards pertained to the CD-ROM "Don't Trash That Planet!")

National award: The City of Sioux City and its partner, US Filter Operating Services, received the 2002 National Council for Public-Private Partnership award for the innovation implementation of the City's wastewater treatment program. The NCPPP selected Sioux City and US Filter based on originality, quality, implementation and financial performance of the 20 year partnership.

Rose Garden Phase II award - Chamber of Commerce- Community Enhancement

Rose Garden Holiday Lighting award- Chamber of Commerce- Community Enhancement

Tree City USA-The City of Sioux City received the Tree City USA Award from the National Arbor Day Foundation and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources

The Trees Please grant was awarded to Sioux City in the amount of $20,000 by MidAmerican Energy

Recreation
Geoff Hubbard, Recreation Superintendent, received the 2006 Dr. Carole J. Hanson New Professional Award from the Iowa Parks and Recreation Association.

The Rose Garden at Grandview Park received the Star of Siouxland Award for the creative decorating display during the holidays.

The Climbing Wall at the Long Lines Family Rec Center received the Star of Siouxland Award for improving recreational opportunities for Sioux Cityans with the adventure sport of rock climbing.

Kyle Smith, City Gardner, and Lori Stedman, Maintenance Worker, were recognized by the Chamber Community Enhancement Committee for their excellence and dedication in maintaining the Rose Garden.

Water Services
Due to the highly successful Riverbank filtration study undertaken by the City of Sioux City, water services personnel were invited by representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to participate in a research workshop. City staff was also invited to make a presentation at the National Groundwater Conference and the American Water Works Association's Annual Conference. Sioux City's approach to treating groundwater under the influence of surface water is being showcased by EPA as an example for other communities to follow. Results were published in the January 2007 issue of the association’s monthly magazine, Opflow.

The Iowa Section of the American Waterworks Association recognized the City of Sioux City as a member of the “100 Year Club” based upon serving as a municipal water supplier since 1884.

Police Department

The Sioux City Police Department has been a nationally-accredited law enforcement agency since July 1995. This prestigious designation comes after a stringent evaluation process and community assessment.

The Sioux City Police Department has invested over $1 million (grant-funded) in new technology in the squad cars over the past 3 years, equipping them with the latest advances the industry has to offer. The City places a premium on public safety.

The Sioux City Police Department's National Training Center opened in 2000 and is the first of its kind in the country. The center has provided vital drug enforcement-related training to over 20,000 law enforcement officials from 41 states since it opened.

In 1999, Sioux City was rated as the safest city in the state of Iowa by Morgan Quitno Press, a well-known publisher of city crime rankings. The City consistently ranks between the 1st and 3rd safest large city in Iowa, and continues to rank among the safest in the nation. In a 2006 city-wide random citizen survey; 81% felt safe walking alone in their neighborhood. Sioux City's crime rate compares favorably with those of similar cities based upon data released yearly by the FBI. In fact, Sioux City is proud to note that its serious crimes have declined overall by 40% since 1995.

Purchasing/Fleet/Transit

The Sioux City Central Maintenance Garage was awarded the 2003 Iowa League of Cities "Star City" award for their innovative approach to efficiency in fleet management.

The Sioux City Fleet Maintenance Program was featured in the International City/County Management’s publication "What Works" for the efficiencies identified through ICMA performance measures.
