State Judo Championships To Be Held at Long Lines
The 2009 Iowa Judo, Inc. State Championships will be held at Long Lines Family Rec. Center on Saturday, November 7th.
The Sioux City Judo Club is the host club for this event. In 2008, five of the club’s students were named state champions and the club won the Junior Team Championship.
Registration and weigh-ins will take place from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. The tournament will begin at 11:30 a.m. with kata (forms) and junior technique demonstration. Master’s competition (over age 30) will start at noon with children’s competition for boys and girls beginning at 12:30 p.m. Adult competition (age 17 and over) for men and women will follow immediately after the completion of the children’s divisions.
The tournament will feature weight-based divisions for both novice and advanced rank adults. Junior and senior team champions will be selected by points earned during the tournament. Medals will be awarded to individuals place first through third in their divisions. Trophies will be awarded in the junior and senior team categories.
The individual entry fee for the tournament is $20 for one division and $5 for each additional division. A family rate of $10 per person applies after second member of the same family. There is no spectator charge for the event.
The Sioux City Judo Club holds classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the Parks and Recreation Department. Classes are held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Hall of Fame Room. Karen Mackey, a sixth degree black belt and this area’s only certified judo coach, is the head instructor.
