Snow Removal Reminder

SNOW REMOVAL REMINDER

The City of Sioux City Community Development Department would like to remind citizens of City rules for snow removal from sidewalks. City rules for snow removal can be found in Municipal Code Chapter 17.24 and are also available for viewing on the City Web Site: www.sioux-city.org.

As a reminder, all property owners are responsible for the removal of snow and ice from public sidewalks in front of their properties within 12 hours of the time snowfall stops. The Municipal Code states that if snow and ice remains on a sidewalk for more than 24 hours after the snowfall stops, then the City may remove the snow and ice and collect payment for such work from the property owner. Such costs will include the City’s inspection and administrative costs. The Code also authorizes the City to issue Municipal Infraction Citations (tickets) to property owners, and collect fines of $50, $100, and $200 for first, second, third and subsequent repeat violations of this rule.

Inspection Services Division is responsible for enforcing the provisions of this chapter of the Code and Inspectors within the Division will be policing neighborhoods throughout the City following each snowfall event for the purpose of ensuring that all sidewalks are clear of snow and ice. Inspectors will also respond to complaints received by inspecting sidewalks to verify the complaint. If the complaint is valid, a notice will then be issued to the property owner in the form of a card stuck in or on the door of the property where the violation has occurred, giving the property owner 24 hours to remove snow and ice. Inspectors will reinspect the following day, and if work isn’t complete, a contractor will then be sent out to do the work. Inspectors will adhere to the Code and issue Municipal Infraction Citations to repeat violators who fail to comply with second and subsequent notices.

The City of Sioux City would like to remind all property owners of the importance of clearing snow and ice from their sidewalks, especially in consideration of our young children who routinely travel to and from school as well as the elderly and others who must use our sidewalks on a daily basis.
We also would like to take this opportunity to thank those property owners who have voluntarily taken action in the past to remove the snow from their sidewalks without the need for assistance through enforcement action by the City.

Citizens with questions or complaints regarding snow removal should call 224-5216.
